Miller and Cheryl are staying at Patrick’s home to help him mend his broken (but now fixed) heart. His wife Nancy has to go to work at the Veteran’s Administration five days each week so it is good that Cheryl and Miller can help Cheryl’s brother, and Miller’s Uncle. Cheryl is a Registered Nurse and Respiratory Therapist so she assures Patrick we can help him each day. Miller’s job is to watch Uncle Patrick and give him lots of love. Miller will get Cheryl if she is not in the room when Patrick needs help. Miller nudges her and gets her to help Patrick when he needs help. Patrick is mending his heart and body so quickly and getting stronger each day. We are really glad we can be with Patrick while Nancy is at her job. It helps her so she can do her job to help Veterans without worrying about Patrick. It’s a very good thing we are here for a few months and not in France where we love to be. Miller misses his runs at the sea but he knows this is a very important job for him now. Patrick tells Miller and Cheryl how happy he is that we can be with him.
Miller spent 11 hours at the hospital on January 29, 2010, the day of Uncle Patrick’s heart surgery. Prior to surgery he hugged and patted Patrick at his bedside in his room. Miller sensed Patrick’s need to have his heart mended and he let Patrick know he would be waiting for him after his surgery. He licked his hand, being careful not to misplace his I.V. in his arm. The wait in the coronary surgical waiting room was very difficult for Miller as he sensed the tension of every person in the room. It was hard for him to sit or lay still because he knew something was troubling each and every person he met. When Miller passed people in the hospital in wheelchairs and stretchers, on his way to the cafeteria for dinner, he tried to comfort each person by a whimper, a nudge and or a lick if they were responsive to him. He was so exhausted by the end of the long day at the hospital and ready to go home to rest. In fact, he calmed down and fell asleep in the car after leaving the hospital. Cheryl decided it was too difficult for Mller to visit Uncle Patrick in the hospital again as he was on sensory overload in the heart unit. So Cheryl and Miller waited to see Uncle Patrick when he went home after five days.

Cheryl’s story in www.workplacebullying.org tells how her life changed from a successful career to one of being bullied and discriminated against and in time, caused her invisible injuries of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) anxiety, depression and (agoraphobia), fear of going out.
Miller, with the help of Cheryl and her sister, Sheila, wrote “Miller’s Red Vest” to share his experiences in becoming a psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) and how he and Cheryl changed their lives by moving to a new country and a new life.

Miller and Cheryl are working on this blog. Thanks for your patience.
We love the sea, the wind in our faces, and the movement of the sea. This is where we go nearly everyday when we are in France.
